It took the pioneering aspects of Diablo, which in turn took its inspiration from Baldur’s Gate, which in turn absorbed the entirety of Dungeons and Dragons (tangent ends here) and made pure gold. There was one other little series that was released during this era, and that’s Diablo. These games pioneered an entire genre and, in some cases, are still best in class. We got Starcraft, Warcraft 1-3, Frozen Throne, and World of Warcraft. This period was known as the Blizzard Golden Age, and let me tell you straight, that is one of the most accurately named periods ever. Thanks to this, Diablo 2: Resurrected will soon enough get its own versions of content mods, which can significantly expand the game. This might shock some of you younger gamers out there, but, did you know, once upon a time Blizzard wasn’t known for ruining Warcraft 3 and abusing their staff? I know, a totally ‘out there’ concept, but it’s true. Also, things that used to be hardcoded were switched into data as well. The team built Resurrected in a way to let modders easily access the project's data. Yet the Diablo fans should not be upset, as Chris Lena noted "data modifications will be a lot simpler to make and implement" to the remaster. This probably means that most iconic mods for the original game, such as Eastern Sun, Hell Unleashed, and Resurgence, that added tons of the new content, would not work with Diablo 2: Resurrected. But the mods that injected code straight into the game will not be supported in the new remaster. Lena said that Diablo 2: Resurrected will "certainly work with the ones that use the original game's data" and that sort of thing. The team had to make some choices in how the new game will handle the community's work. Producer Chris Lena shared a new intel on user mods for D2: Resurrected, as PCGamesN reported.
